Below is a list of the volunteer members of OneWorld Classrooms' Advisory Board. In 2007, the members of the Advisory Board participated in a Strategic Plan review process, an important step in the formation of OneWorld Classrooms. The members continue to provide invaluable insights as the organization grows. Phy Chauveau is celebrating her 25th year of teaching at Germantown Academy, America's oldest nonsectarian day school (founded in 1759). At GA, Phy teaches fifth grade, and serves as the Curricular Technology Coordinator and the Director of Summer Academic Programs. She is also a Discovery Education Network Star Educator; was selected as a Keystones Technology Integrator for the state of Pennsylvania in 2004; and has been a regular presenter at local and national technology conferences, including the National Educational Computing Conference. http://www.germantownacademy.net/
Johnson Cerda is a Fellow at Conservation International's Indigenous and Traditional Peoples' Initiative and has recently completed his law degree at the University of Loja in Ecuador. He has worked for indigenous organizations throughout the Ecuadorian Amazon for a decade and served as the Co-Director of the Amazon Alliance in Washington, D.C. between 2001 and 2005. He has also been an active participant in international discussions on indigenous rights in connection with World Bank policy, the OAS Declaration on Indigenous Rights, and global climate change. Sally Donnelly is a Reading Specialist at Stenwood Elementary School in Vienna, VA. She has also taught Kindergarten, 3rd and 4th grade at St. Agnes School in Arlington, VA and Churchill Road Elementary School in McLean, VA. This year marks her 16th year of teaching. Fred Fu is a OneWorld Classrooms Project Liaison and an English teacher at the Qingzhuhu-Xiangyi Foreign Languages School, Changsha, Hunan Province, China. He has coordinated exchanges with partner schools in New York, Connecticut and Florida.
Anna Gates is the Director of the Montessori-inspired Amauta School in Loja, Ecuador. Amauta follows a constructivist model, implementing a system of fluid transition through learning areas rather than dividing students into grade levels. The school has 50 students, aged 3-9 and eight teachers. Anna has also taught at the University of Loja and first worked in Ecuador as a volunteer English teacher with WorldTeach in 1995/6. The Amauta School has participated in OneWorld Classrooms for the past two years, partnering with schools in California and Wisconsin.
Barbara Gurney is a retired elementary school teacher with 20 years teaching experience. She taught third grade at West Patent Elementary School in Bedford Hills, NY for the last 10 years of her career, serving as Team Leader, co-teaching with a learning specialist in an inclusive classroom, spearheading curriculum development and staff development initiatives at both school and district levels and integrating OneWorld Classrooms programming and Annenburg Media's Journey North into the third grade curriculum on a yearly basis.
Daniel Hurteau, a partner at Nixon Peabody LLP in Albany, NY, is a graduate of Siena College and Albany Law School. He is a member of the New York, Albany County, Monroe County, and Dallas Bar Associations and is a member and past President of the Board of Directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region (Albany, NY). http://www.nixonpeabody.com/
Don Hutzel is the Principal of Churchill Road Elementary School in McLean, VA. He has served as Assistant Principal at Churchill for two years and Principal for six. Before that, he was a classroom teacher, working with children in grades 4-8 in a variety of programs. He graduated from the University of Steubenville in 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary and Special Education and earned his master's degree in School Administration from George Mason University in 1999. http://www.fcps.edu/ChurchillRoadES/
John Klus is a 7th and 8th grade Ancient History, World Geography and American Studies teacher at the Sayre School, an independent co-educational college preparatory day school in Lexington, KY. John has taught for 14 years at Sayre and has also taught high school History in Louisville, KY and Philadelphia, PA. He received his B.A. at Oakland University and his M.A.T. at the University of Louisville. John's classes have interacted with Creative Connections Project partner classes in Hunan Province, China for the past two years, completing art, PowerPoint, music (video) and E-mail Q & A exchanges. http://www.sayreschool.org/
Mary Six Rupert is the Managing Officer of the Fiscal Sponsorship program at the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA). NYFA is OneWorld Classrooms' fiscal sponsor. As OneWorld Classrooms develops, Mary and other staff at NYFA will provide banking and accounting services and technical assistance with board development, fundraising, budgeting and strategic planning. http://www.nyfa.org/
Peggy Sharkey is the Project Director of the Language and Culture Resource Center at the Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex Board of Cooperative Educational Services in Saratoga Springs, NY. She has also served as a Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages in Saratoga Springs and the Coordinator of the BOCES Foreign Language Assistance Program. http://www.wswheboces.org/
Kelvin Asare-Williams is a OneWorld Classrooms Project Liaison who works with partner schools in Accra, Ghana. He is the President and Founder of the Junior Art Club in Ghana and he has coordinated Creative Connections Project exchanges involving three schools in the Accra area, the Adeiso Presby School, St. Kizito's Primary School and St. Paul's Lutheran School. These schools have interacted with partner schools in PA and TX over the past two school years, completing fabric art, painting, PowerPoint and E-mail Q & A exchanges. http://www.junior-art-club.org
Kathy Woods Masalski is the Program Coordinator of the Five College Center for East Asian Studies at Smith College in Northampton, MA. Formerly a high school History teacher, she also runs a coordinating site for the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA), which conducts nation-wide seminars that train US K-12 teachers how to incorporate Asia into their curriculum. (Many teachers who have completed NCTA seminars have also participated in OneWorld Classrooms.) Kathy has led numerous study tours to Japan and China for groups of US teachers and is a recipient of the John E. Auditing Member Helen Claire Sievers has served as the Executive Director of WorldTeach, Inc. of the Center for International Development at Harvard University since 2001. Before working with WorldTeach, she spent 18 years living in the Marshall Islands, serving as a high school principal, a hospital administrator, a community court judge, and the director of a handicraft co-op. Previously, Helen Claire taught astronomy at Wellesley and Bentley Colleges, and was Executive Director of the Thyroid Foundation of America. She is a graduate of Wellesley College with a degree in astronomy and has a M.S. in physics from Brigham Young University. She is a recipient of the "Patriotic Civilian Service Award" from the United States Army for the work she did in improving U.S. - Marshallese relations. WorldTeach sends volunteer teachers to Bangladesh, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guyana, India, the Marshall Islands, Mongolia, Namibia, Pohnpei, Poland, South Africa and Venezuela for year-long and summer programs.
